Its active compounds, called anthraquinones, stimulate muscle contractions in the large intestine to promote bowel movements and relieve constipation. In addition to increasing intestinal motility, it also inhibits the absorption of water and electrolytes, which helps soften the stool. This mechanism makes it effective for short-term constipation relief. Cascara bark is not recommended for long-term consumption.
