Blessed Thistle herb Cut and Sifted
(Cnicus benedicus)
Blessed thistle (Cnicus benedictus) is a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region. Blessed thistle, also known as holy thistle, has been used since the Middle Ages for cold and flu symptoms, promote digestive health and prevent infection. Blessed thistle has a long history in traditional medicine, primarily as a digestive aid to address poor appetite, indigestion, and gas. The herb contains the bitter compound cnicin, which is thought to stimulate the flow of saliva and gastric juices, thereby facilitating digestion. It is also traditionally used by nursing mothers to help increase breast milk production, though scientific evidence is limited. Preliminary research suggests the plant may have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and even nerve-regenerating properties due to compounds like cnicin, but more clinical studies are needed to confirm these potential benefits in humans.
Blessed thistle Nutrient content: Blessed thistle contains a variety of natural compounds rather than a standard "nutritional facts" profile like common vegetables. Blessed thistle herb is notably high in essential minerals, particularly potassium, magnesium, calcium, manganese, selenium, phosphorus, sodium, and zinc. It provides a small amount of protein, fiber, and healthy fatty acids (linoleic and oleic acids are found in the seed). The plant's primary active constituents are the bitter sesquiterpene lactone cnicin, tannins, flavonoids, and essential oils, which contribute to its medicinal properties rather than caloric or macronutrient intake.
